The Building of a Great Trail

NOTE: This trail is NOT open until next year. Please obey the closure so that we do not lose it!!

We will have a brand new trail for us to spend hours playing on next spring. The trail has been named "The Quack Attack" in honor of Mr. Randy Drake aka "Papa Duck". Randy has spent decades working to get a real Class II trail in this area and he has succeeded masterfully. In addition to Randy, we need to thank Mr. Mike McFadin of the Forest Service for working with us to make this dream come true and also thank the many volunteers who spent weekends for several months laboring to build this trail.

The work is not done, though. There are still a couple of areas that need to be armored up to make them safer and several more trees that need to be protected. We also will need to install signage.

This trail IS NOT a graded forest service road renamed as a trail. It is a true Class II 4x4 trail, requiring lockers, larger tires and driver skill. It is everything that Randy has worked so hard to get. It will be open to quads and motorcycles but it was built by 4x4 people specifically for 4x4 rigs.

Here are a bunch of pictures from over the past couple of months.

Interesting idea on the tree armor...how did that come about??? Has it been used on other trails in your area? If so, how has it held up to the abuse?

All the pictures above do not do this trail justice. If you are into harder trails, you will love the optional loops that are on the left and right of the main trail section. I personally do not mind winching in a few areas to play on a great trail. The idea was to make it hard for everyone because there are easy trails already in this area. This trail will challenge any rig regardless of tire size or driver ability. COME ON SUMMER!!!!

This is great news to get a new trail. I cant wait to try it out. I would suggest covering those batteries if they have to be so close when welding. Keep up the good work.

Wow, nice work.
Congratulations, and not just on building what looks to be a REAL Class II trail, but on working with the USFS to make it happen. This is exactly the kind of thing that can and should be going on, with the right approach and cooperation. It's a great example of what is possible. There's no reason why this can't happen a lot more, in a lot more places.

I'd be interested in any future work parties and will pass the word. Please keep us updated. By spring I may have a rig that could give that a try.

I'm glad to see you were able to work on a route close to the original planned in that spot, and get something better. Mike (USFS) seems to be an OK guy to talk to (have not met him yet). Waiting on snow going away next year to put boots on ground for the other 2 routes, from 723 to the corner of the burn and from 833 to the corner. Our talks so far on the 833 route sound promising.

Great job.
