Reiter Foothills Forest
Wondering where things are with Reiter Foothills Forest motorized trail construction? Here's a brief summary of what you can expect over the next few months:
Construction details. The single-track motorcycle trail plans and details for Area 6will be presented at the Reiter Foothill Focus Group meeting on April 25. The design/planning team from our Olympia headquarters will be at the meeting to answer your questions. The design plan was delayed for a couple of weeks due to the late spring snows, which prevented us from getting to the area to do a field review of the plans.
Parking T-1 and T-2 finish. The specifications for work at T-1 were finalized and passed on to our DNR road crew. We are now scheduling construction of T-1 and the final lift of rock on T-2.
Construction sequence. We reviewed the construction sequence map for single-track trails showing the expanding system of loops north of the Deer Flats Mainline Road in Area 6. Construction of the "Red" trail on the sequencing map is scheduled to begin in early June.
Construction timing. We are ordering the rock to stockpile for trail construction; contracting with an experienced mini-excavator operator who will do the earth work on the trail construction project; and arranging for four months' worth of Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crew time to begin constructing the trail in June.
Volunteer opportunities. Volunteer work will complement the work to be done by the WCC crews. We will keep you posted on when those projects happen. You can also check DNR's volunteer calendar for opportunities all across the state.
Section 1, 4x4 trails. While our focus has been on Area 6 trails this winter, we are starting to work on Phase 1 trail design in Area 1 as well. We are expecting to have draft designs available for public input by the end of May.
Non-motorized trails. Survey crews are scheduled to begin surveying the proposed bridge sites. The design team will start preliminary design and permitting work later this summer.
