July, 1986 Pismo - Report

Pismo Sand Dunes
Report by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

Here is my 4 wheelin' trip at Pismo in July, 1986.
Cliff and I left Modesto, California after we got off of work to go 4 wheelin'. We were going to wheel in the foot hills west of Modesto and found they were closed off because of fire danger. So we decided to go check out girls in Santa Cruz. We spent Friday night out on the beach. That morning we headed down to Pismo where the big sand dunes were. It was a long drive. On the way my fan clutch went out on my 77 GMC Jimmy. We stop and bought a high price one at some coastal town and then were back on the road. We got to Pismo bench and it was cool driving a long the ocean. As soon as we got off the beach and headed out to the big dunes we were stuck. Two guy came over with their rigs and told us we had to air down. They said they were run 5 psi. I didnít want to push it so I only aired down to 10 psi. That worked just fine for the all season tires I had. The two guys said they lived in Santa Cruz and came down wheel for the weekend. We all decided to wheel together for the weekend.

My tranny cooler came loose and Cliff is wiring it back up.

This guy is standing in the back of his rig as it is driving down the beach.

The sand dunes were big. You had to get your speed up to top the real big ones. The fist time I hit this dune I was going to fast and flew a good 9 foot off the ground. The guys said it was cool and we should take pictures so I tried it a few more times but not as fast because of the hard landing.

Banking the dunes is a blast.

Brings back old memories as I lived there until 1986. Spent many days on the beach fishing, many evenings watching the sun set, many nights camped in the dunes.

It was only a couple years before that the beach was open all the way to and past Santa Maria. Point mago (sp) now that was a beutiful drive from the town of Pismo or the entrances in Oceano.

My parents use to go there a lot for ocean thing. I was only there once and loved it. I read that they are closing a lot of the dunes off because of the tree huggers.

Brings back old memories for me as well. That was the year I got out of the Army and bought the Jimmy. I wheel California and then Washington where ever I found a place to go by word of mouth. To bad we didn't have the net back then. I had the Jimmy 18 years. I miss that old truck. :(
I have me another Jimmy now but it will not see near as the places since so much has changed over the years with areas to wheel.

Back in the day before internet, that is how we had to do things if our friends wouldn't come wheelin' with us. Just go and hope you can run with someone in case you got stuck or broke down. Most of the time it would work out but I have had to limp home on my own many times. I don't wheel alone anymore. I have the internet to thank for that.
