Pacific Northwest Trail?
Had an AP article in our local fish wrapper yesterday (6/14/09) on this bill that was passed and signed on March 30. Creates a trail (non-motorized, of course) from Glacier Nat. Park to Cape Alava. Supposedly the non-profit Pacific Northwest Trail Assoc has been improving and signing segments for the past three decades.
Since this passes through three national parks, (Park Service, Interior Dept.) and portions of seven national forests (USFS),and who knows how much BLM land and this work has been done, where is the NEPA and FLPMA documentation for all of this work as well as the desigination? With all of the parks and forests involved, an EA won't cut it, would have to be a full blown EIS that will take at least a couple of years to complete. I have never even heard a whisper of one in 30 + years of fooling with land use issues.
We had to remove all signage of the Backcountry Discovery Route because of that. If this has not been done we need to be holding someone's feet to lthe fire. Supposedly USFS is the lead agency.
Will be near the US/Canada border for most of the distance according to the article.
Something for the WA and ID directors to look at as well as possibly the Region 1,4, and 7 Directors.
Was in the Albany Democrat Hearld, but don't know if it made the online version or not. www.dhonline.com
