CleElum spring seasonal closure
File Code: 2300
Date: March 21,2012
The Cle Elum Ranger District proposes to implement a seasonal closure of motorized vehicles on motorized trails exactly as was done last spring. Motorized vehicles such as motorcycles, jeeps, and ATVís will be allowed on motorized trails only after those trails are dry and seasonal logout (cutting out logs that have fallen across the trail during the winter) has been completed. In general, trails will be opened on a loop-by-loop basis. The Forest Service, along with volunteer partners, will make every effort to keep trail logout current so each trail loop can be opened as soon as it is dry. Sanctioned volunteers (those who have made arrangements with the Forest Service in advance) will be permitted on certain trails prior to the opening date for the sole purpose of assisting with seasonal maintenance. Information about which trails are open at any given time will be posted on the Forest website and on bulletin boards at key motorized trail heads.
Many years of experience have shown that most of the damage to a motorized trail comes from spinning tires when the trail is wet. Once a trail dries out, tires grip and there is far less soil displacement and erosion. Last Springís closure came as a result of recommendations from users and trail workers, and worked very well. Trails sustained far less damage than in previous springs which made for less repair work needed.
We propose to implement this seasonal closure exactly like last year. This closure would be to motorized vehicles only. Non-motorized recreationists would not be affected. If you have any questions or concerns please contact trail manager Tim Foss at tfoss.@fs.fed.us.
