Rain on the Fire
Cle Elum, Wash. – Moderate to heavy rain fell over the fire area on Friday, with 1.3 inches of rain being recorded at a RAWS or Remote Automated Weather Station, located near the fire. This is good news for fire fighters as only a few smokes were observed within the fire area yesterday. As a result, all but one 20 person hand crew has been released from the fire. The remaining crew will spend the next several days rehabbing hand and dozer lines where there is no longer a risk of the fire spreading, and will retrieve hose lays, sprinklers and other miscellaneous suppression and support equipment as well.
The 2352 acre fire is now at 40% containment. Although containment lines are constructed, and some are being rehabbed, the fire perimeter has not reached the lines on the northern and eastern flanks. Even with the precipitation, remaining unburned fuels have the potential to ignite and cross established lines with forecast warmer and drier weather early next week. These unburned fuels within the interior of the fire will continue to torch and put up smoke until snow falls on the fire area. Due to the hazards presented by unburned vegetation and snags, the area remains unsafe for public entry.
Area, trail, and road closures in the vicinity of the fire remain in to place protect firefighter and public safety. The number one objective of this fire is to keep the public and firefighters safe. Details of the closure boundaries, lists of closed roads and trails, and relevant maps are available on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forests website. Only firefighters, Forest Service or other agency personnel, and law enforcement are allowed access to closure areas. Although reevaluated daily, these closure levels are unlikely to change for several days.
Fire danger remains high. Please check the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forests website for current campfire restrictions.
