Default Copyright date

Just noticed the copyright date at the bottom of most pages in the main site says 2008. Even though most of the content probably hasn't been updated since then, the copyright should probably say 2010.

I agreee. I am the kind that looks something up on the web, and look at the fine print and if it is out of date I assume the information is out of date and go somewhere else.....AS THE TRAIL JAMBOREE INFORMATION!!! Sorry...did I just explode?

I would have guessed the copyright date relates to the software not the content. Looks to be current now, or am I looking at the wrong place.

Wrong place.

You are right that the copyright at the bottom of the forum pages refers to the forum software and is up to date.

I was referring to the copyright at the bottom of the pages on the rest of the site. It is still out of date.

I realize that a lot of people (including the webmasters) never look at (or update) the rest of the site, but that's not how it should be (IMHO).

I don't know all the legal details, but...

My understanding is that the copyright date indicates when material was first published in its current form. For a book, that is the date of first printing of the current edition.

Most web sites seem to treat the copyright as applying to the site as a whole. so the copyright date shown on ALL pages is the last date ANY page was updated.

I believe most people who see a copyright date on a web page assume it applies to the whole site. So, when they see a 2008 copyright date, they conclude that the page was last updated in 2008.

hey Thanks Alan for your insite I will go ahead and update all the dates to 2010 and then when more time presents it self I will get on to the copyright page and reasearch it further. From what I read one day in a few minuts the art has to be registered but like you said the date reflects the last design update. (Not no expert here)

On my personal web site, I have two dates: One is the copyright date which reflects the date the website was first online then a dash and the current year. The second date is separate and is a "This page last updated" date. Here's an example from one of my pages:

Code:
This page last updated: November 15, 2009

Site contents and layout copyright 2005 - 2010 by website owner.
All rights reserved.
I have a simple javascript that does not require updating of the copyright date after the first year. In the javascript you enter the first date and that's all. The javascript is written in such a way that it checks the web server for the current year!

Here's the URL to the code:

http://javascript.internet.com/page-...ht-update.html
