Man drives over cliff at Selah rest area, dies

Yakima Herald-Republic

SELAH, Wash. -- A man died Monday night after driving over a cliff from the rest area off eastbound Interstate 82.

Authorities at the scene had little information about what happened and couldn't identify the man late Monday. He was driving what's believed to be a white Ford Explorer.

A witness told authorities he had seen the vehicle line up about 8 p.m. in the parking lot area reserved for semi-trucks before taking off toward a fence.

"It accelerated really rapidly toward the edge, jumped the curb and went over the edge," said Washington State Patrol Sgt. Ed McAvoy, pointing to deep tire tracks in the dirt and a broken fence just east of the main rest area building.

The vehicle landed in the Selah Creek canyon, which is about 100 feet deep, authorities said.

It is not believed anybody else was in the vehicle. Yakima County Sheriff's deputies and Selah firefighters also responded to the incident.

Reminds me of the movie "Thelma and Louise". I agree, truely sad.
