It is even worse for signup at registration because the first person in gets exactly what they want every day and the last one in gets the leftovers, if any, every day.

What I had suggested the last time there was a discussion about tail signup for Trailjam was a form of lottery. Each day, people's registration numbers would be drawn out of a hat to determine the order in which they could sign up for their choice of trail. They could include up to four (or whatever number you choose) of their friends, if there were enough slots available.

Something similar could work for online signup during registration. Each person puts the trails in order from most desirable to least desirable and provides a list of friends they want to run with. After all registrations are in, we randomly select people and assign them and their friends to the most desirable trail that has enough slots available.
1. Aggressive people have long been rewarded for their pursuits and enthusiasm in chasing what they want. If a person does not want to be last then they should work harder and make the sacrifices to come in first. IMHO

2. The random selection sounds like a fair way to delve out trails, but it also sounds like a lot of work for the folk sorting through registrations. Not to mention it is anybodies guess what trail conditions will be during the T.J. and there again leaving some folks with an "Unhappy time".

The way we set the starting point of the line last year for trail sign up seemed to work just fine. It gave everyone a fair chance at the trail they wanted. The aggressive me first folks that were in the front of the line actually ended up at the end of the line a few times.

Maybe this would work.

1: Hand out a trail selection list with registraion packet. Include days and trail w/host name (give folks time to mull it over with friends)

2: Every one lines up at the first drivers meeting like last year.

3: Randomly split the line for the starting point like last year and sign up begins.

Or, stick to the old way it seemed to work fine.

I didn't think last year went bad at all....Things seemed to run pretty smoothly as far as sign ups---If anything maybe make another split in the line, making three lines---then hold a small drawing as to which lines go 1st,2nd,3rd......

Mostly it's a time thing. There are a lot more things people could be doing rather than standing in line choosing trails. Bt my count about 45 minutes is about what it takes.

We also could leave it as is and maybe manage two or three lines at a time. Last year it did get better each nite. I like the idea.

Pick all trails first night with 3 lines. That way we could sit around drink beer and socialize...

I've gotten some great ideas both from this and other forums. I have also received pm's, emails and phone calls with good suggestions. So for now we are going to shelve the idea of on-line trail selection. I do believe melding the best of these ideas will result in a faster more user friendly trail signup experience for those attending. Thank you everyone.

Having been to the Trail Jam page , which I am assuming has been updated, I have notice that under USFS rules a shovel and bucket are required. Is that for each rig?
