Wildfire burns in Goat Rocks Wilderness Area

Yakima Herald-Republic

WHITE PASS -- Fire officials were monitoring a fire Friday evening in the Goat Rocks Wilderness Area, southeast of the White Pass Ski Area, that had grown to 300 acres, officials said.

The fire in the Twin Peaks area began Monday.

Doug Jenkins, information specialist for the Naches Ranger District, said the blaze has not grown much since two loads of retardant were dropped on the fire Tuesday.

Fire officials are keeping tabs on the blaze, according to the Central Washington Interagency Communications Center in Wenatchee.

There was no word on the cause of the fire.

NEAR NACHES, Wash. -- Naches Ranger District leaders say the Twin Peaks wildfire in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, which grew to 800 acres, is under control.

Doug Jenkins, Information/Public Affairs for the District, said the fire Southeast of White Pass, was most likely caused by last month's lightning.

Jenkins said Forest Roads 1207 and 830 will remain closed, until further notice.

Crews will continue to "mop-up" and monitor the area.

Also, the Department of Natural Resources, gave the go ahead for the Naches Ranger District to begin fuel burning, of approx. 2,000 acres, at Bethel Ridge, north of U.S. Highway 12.
