Default New Oregon Wilderness Bill

Well, our Local senator and representative (Wyden and Defazio) are at it again. Introduced a bill on Tuesday that proposes 30,000 acres of wilderness in the Siuslaw NF for an area known as Devil's Staircase. Would also expand Oregon Caves Nat. Mon. by 4000 acres and add 143 miles of Rogue River tributaries to the Wild and Scenic River System. No bill number in the article. Was also introduced last year but did not go anywhere. Better chance this time around with the makeup of DC. All down in Region 6 area.

Wasson Creek and Devil's Staircase Wilderness is HR2888, Rogue River is HR 2890, and Oregon Caves is HR 2889 Need to keep an eye on these, but with the makeup of Congress I look for them to pass.

Article in our local paper over the weekend that one of the USFS deputy chiefs testified in congressthat the USFS is in favor of the desigination of 30,000 acres of wilderness for the Devils Staircase. (east of Reedsport, between Umpqua and Smith Rivers.)

IMO - where does the management agency get off being in favor of something. They should be a neutral party. Of course that makes their job easier, as it will be "management by non-management" when it goes to wilderness.
