Default Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act

On April 15th, Rep Kevin McCarthy (CA) introduced a bill in the US House of Representatives that will give back some of the lands the BLM and USFS have previously set aside for possible wilderness area designation. After studing these lands, the BLM and USFS have determined some of these lands are not suitable for wilderness designation, but due to various Federal laws, the BLM and USFS have to leave them in their current status.

I am the point person for the Washington Off Highway Vehicle Alliance (WOHVA) for tracking this bill.

I will provide updates as I receive them from Rep McCarthy's office.

In the meanwhile, please take a look at the attached PDF files.

In this era of land closures, this may turn out to be good news!

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks,

Thanks for the link to the bill, Paul. We've had a copy of a preliminary press release on our site since April 6th, but this is great. Please keep us in the loop!

Do you know if the PNW4WDA is a supporter of this legislation? I have not seen the latest list of supporters.
If they are not, are they taking action to become a supporter?

The PNW4WDA is a supporter of the legislation and has signed on as a supporter. We have submitted a letter of support.

Sen Barrasso (WY) has also filed a bill in the US Sentate (S.1087) that would do basically the same thing.

So now I am watching two bills in the federal congress.

Hearings on both bills are supposed to be scheduled for this fall.

Will keep everyone posted on how they move along.
