U.S. FOREST SERVICE FIRE UPDATE

Type III Incident Team Assumes Management of Conrad Complex
Naches WA-- On August 10th a lightning storm started multiple fires on the Naches Ranger District, including the Conrad Complex.
The Conrad Complex is located North of Conrad Meadows, west of the South Fork Tieton River, and approximately 8 miles south of Rimrock Lake. As of Sunday evening, the fire is estimated to be approximately 300 acres.
Forest Service fire crews have been battling the fire since ignition, however, steep terrain and dry fuel conditions have made suppression efforts difficult. Fire behavior was aggressive on Sunday, despite favorable weather conditions.
To relieve local fire management staff, an Interagency Type III Incident Management Team has been assigned to manage the Conrad Complex. Participating agencies include US Forest Service, WA State Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Yakima County.
Due to the potential for large fire growth, the public is asked to comply with local area closures. Concerned for public safety, fire managers request the public to avoid using Forest System Road (FSR) 1000, south of its junction with FSR 1040 around Minnie Meadows, and FSR 1070 between its junction with FSR 1000 to its junction with FSR 1070-595.
Fire managers understand this is a popular recreation area and ask for Forest-user cooperation at this time. Firefighters are working diligently to minimize acres burned and limit the impact to recreation. In addition, all agencies are in agreement to mitigate firefighter exposure and ensure crews’ safety.
Fire restrictions remain in place on the Naches Ranger District. Only gas fires or stoves are permitted. Campfires or other ignition sources are not permitted. For more information, contact the Naches Ranger District Front Office at 509-653-1401.

What’s New: This is the last update from this fire. This fire will become a part of the Manastash Ridge Fire Complex (tentative complex name) based near Cle Elum and updates will come from there. For the latest information on this and other wildfires, including road and area closures, please go to the website http://inciweb.org. An alternative contact for road and area closures in the Rimrock Lake area is the Naches Ranger District office at (509) 653-1401.
The fire did not grow yesterday. More resources were released yesterday and more again today. The management team will be released on Saturday. Approximately 150 personal will remain on this fire to finish it out. That number will probably decrease over time. There was a good rain shower this morning at Rimrock.
The fire has hung up in the rocks or in wet areas along creeks on a large portion of the fire perimeter. There are still some portions of the fire on the south side that are being allowed to creep down to the road which has been prepped as a control line. Rehabilitation of fire trails and other areas continues. The low containment level is due to the fire having so much open line in the wilderness. It will remain low probably until the fall rains come.
Weather: Expect cooler blustery and showery weather today and tomorrow. Temperatures on the fire in the 60’s, humidity around 50%, winds gusting to 25 mph this afternoon.
The fire is still mostly within the Goat Rocks Wilderness with some acres outside the wilderness on National Forest and private lands. Base camp is at the Peninsula by Rimrock Lake. The roads in the area of the fire and around the Peninsula are closed as well as some campgrounds accessed by roads that are now closed. See below for details on those closures. State highways 12 and 410 are open. Background: This fire started by lightning on Friday August 9 and is burning eight miles south of Rimrock Lake and 35 miles southwest of Naches, WA. There are flight restrictions within a seven mile radius of the fire and at the Tieton Airstrip which is at the east end of Rimrock Lake. The Tieton airstrip is closed to general aviation. No campfires are allowed on National Forest lands. The fire is located mostly in Sections 15 and 22 of Township 12 N, Range 12 E. Road Closures: National Forest roads 1000, 1204, 1205, 1200-725, and the 1070 between its junction with the 1000 to its junction with 1070-595. Trail Closures: Bear Creek Mountain Trail #1130. Conrad Meadows is closed. Area Closures: Rimrock Peninsula Recreation Area including the boat launch. There is no access from the 1200 road onto the 1200-711, 1200-712, 1200-713, 1200-714, 1200-715, 1200-716, 1200-725, and 1200-653 roads.

Select Road Closures Have Been Lifted in Relation to the Conrad Lake Fire
Naches-- Due to decreased fire activity and decreased fire traffic, a portion of the closures related to the Conrad Lake Fire have now been lifted. The remaining roads and trail still under closure are not anticipated to be opened until the area receives a fire season weather ending event of substantial rain or snow.
The Rimrock Peninsula Recreation Area, including the boat launch, is now open. Additionally, Forest Roads 1204 and 1205 are now open providing access to Pinegrass Ridge.
The road block on Road 1000 has now been moved further up the drainage to its intersection with the 1000-750 Road. Forest Road 1000-750 is open.
There is still active fire above Forest Road 1000, further south of its intersection with the Forest Road 1000-750 road block. The portion of Forest Road 1000 from its intersection with the 1000-750 Road to its intersection with the 1070 Road is still closed and not anticipated to be opened until a fire season weather ending event occurs.
Trail #1130, Bear Creek Mountain Trail, will also remain closed at this time. Road 1070 between its intersection with the 1000 Road and its intersection with the 1070-595 Road is still closed.
Although some areas of the national forest have received some rain, camp fires are still prohibited on the Naches Ranger District. Woody material and vegetation remain very dry. Please observe all county and local burn bans.

U.S. FOREST SERVICE NEWS RELEASE
Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

Conrad Lake Fire in Patrol, Monitoring Status
NACHES—Firefighters on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest’s Naches Ranger District are monitoring and patrolling the 1,100-acre Conrad Lake Fire, located about eight miles south of Rimrock Lake and about 35 miles southwest of Naches.
Naches Ranger District firefighters have been managing suppression of the fire since September 3, when Washington Interagency Incident Management Team 4 transferred suppression actions to the ranger district.
The firefighters have seen little smoke on the fire since last week when up to an inch of rain fell on parts of it. The fire was active on the northeast perimeter and began backing down into the Bear Creek drainage before the weather system arrived.
Firefighters had contained about 30 percent of the fire at that time and had rehabilitated much of the fire area. Fire managers will have better estimates of the percentage of containment later this week.
They caution a warming trend is forecasted for this week and forest fuels are now drying out. They will be closely monitoring the fire to ensure it does not grow and present further hazards.
Road and trail closures will remain in effect for the Conrad Lake Fire area until threats to public safety are reduced. Fire managers do not anticipate lifting closure orders until substantial amounts of precipitation fall on the fire area.
