Fifth Grade Poster Program
Each year over the Memorial Day weekend, Region 6 hosts a poker run at the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes. The the poker run pot is split two ways with one half going to poker run winners and the other half going to sponsor a poster contest for Lake County school kids educating them on the negative effects of vandalism and littering on public lands. This program is a joint effort between Region 6 and the Lakeview District of the BLM and has been going on for many, many years.

GREAT program! Its wonderful to see and hear about POSITIVE efforts that can be directed in many directions for 'us' and to get the word out that there ARE good 4x4 people in the NW (to others points of view of course).

Tell me - how did you get the school involved? Or approch them?

The program was started years ago. We as "the public" cannot go to the school. The agency is able to though. So to restart the program I wrote to the Lakeview District BLM and reminded them of the program and they (the recreational tech.) set up the dates for the presentations etc. It would be the same to start a new program. Except if you know an administrator at the school district and pre-prepare them with your ideas for your program. The BLM right now is emphisising youth activities it seems. The best way to start is to dive right in. Run it by the agency and the school too.
