Default Evans Creek Tragedy

Just found this over at Komo. Never wheel alone. Find better friends. Monday's weather was not great wheelin weather.

CARBONADO, Wash. -- A Puyallup man was killed and his 4-year-old son was critically injured after crashing their truck in the Cascade foothills Monday night.

John Layton of Puyallup and his son were last seen near Evans Creek Off Road Vehicle Park, which is about 45 miles southeast of Seattle on Highway 165 near Carbonado, said Det. Sgt. Jerry Bates with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

"I think it's very fortunate, and we just hope that he continues to improve," said Bates of the boy. "We'll hope for the best for the young man."

Layton sent a text to friends Monday night saying he flipped his truck. Concerned friends called police Tuesday morning.

Rescuers reached the truck late Tuesday morning and found Layton dead inside the truck and his son critically injured.

Bates said it is not known why friends didn't call 911 on Monday night.

"I couldn't tell you. I have no idea," he said. "Obviously, if someone finds themselves in a similar situation, we would want to hear from them in that situation."

The boy was taken to an elementary school, then flown by medical helicopter to Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma.

Investigators have not said yet what caused them to crash.

A rain gauge along the nearby Carbon River measured 1.20" of rain from Monday morning through Tuesday morning. Video from Air4 showed continued rain and heavy cloud cover in the area late Tuesday morning, but it's unclear if weather was a factor in the crash.
