Karl Forsgaard is chair, Sierra Club National Recreation Issues Committee, Board member, North Cascades Conservation Council, Board member, Predator Conservation Alliance, Board member and Secretary, Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, and Past President, Washington Trails Association. Karl Forsgaard lives at XXXX, XXst Ave SE in Mercer Island and is owner of the Optiva Corporation, XXXXX SE XXth St, Bellevue, WA 98005-4447.

Karl grew up in the Northeast (New Jersey), got a biology degree from Harvard (was even on the rowing team) and worked in its Museum of Comparative Zoology. In 1979, he moved to Seattle to attend University of Washington School of Law. Since 1991, he has served as a pro bono attorney for coalitions fighting off-road vehicle (ORV) damage to National Forest roadless areas in Washington, developing significant case law. He has been a State-appointed Hiker Rep to several recreation-related advisory committees in Washington including the IAC, and volunteers for conservation nonprofits protecting public lands and biodiversity. For his day job, he practices employment law in Washington and California with the law firm Bendich, Stobaugh & Strong.

Karl quote: "Motorized recreation is a growing threat to Wilderness. Use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) such as snowmobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and jet skis is increasing, and technological changes allow these machines to go deeper into wild places. ORVs damage ecosystems, destroy natural quiet, harass wildlife and impair other users' experience. Roadless Areas may be developed into ORV Motorsports Parks if not designated Wilderness. Aerial and ground monitoring helps in litigation, legislation and administrative action. Restoring ORV-damaged areas can assist Wilderness eligibility...Non-motorized recreation has impacts. Also, mountain bike advocates are opposing new Wilderness since bikes would be excluded as "mechanized travel..."
