In 1979, he moved to Seattle to attend University of Washington School of Law. He has been a State-appointed Hiker Rep to several recreation-related advisory committees in Washington including the IAC, and volunteers for conservation nonprofits protecting public lands and biodiversity. For his day job, he practices employment law in Washington and California with the law firm Bendich, Stobaugh & Strong. Karl quote: "Motorized recreation is a growing threat to Wilderness. Use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) such as snowmobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and jet skis is increasing, and technological changes allow these machines to go deeper into wild places. ORVs damage ecosystems, destroy natural quiet, harass wildlife and impair other users' experience. Roadless Areas may be developed into ORV Motorsports Parks if not designated Wilderness. Aerial and ground monitoring helps in litigation, legislation and administrative action. Restoring ORV-damaged areas can assist Wilderness eligibility...Non-motorized recreation has impacts. Also, mountain bike advocates are opposing new Wilderness since bikes would be excluded as "mechanized travel..."
