Default Gifford Pinchot National Forest Draft Analysis Report

Draft Travel Analysis Report to be shared at Community Meetings

Release Date: May 11, 2015

Contact: Sue Ripp 360-891-5222

Vancouver, WA – The Gifford Pinchot National Forest will host public meetings over the next few weeks in communities around the Forest to share the Draft Travel Analysis Report. Forest staff will provide information on how the draft report was developed, answer questions, and have the report available for review at the public meetings.

Thursday, May 21, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Rock Creek Hegewald Center, 710 SW Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson, WA

Wednesday, May 27, 6:00 pm– 8:00 pm at the Randle Fire Hall, US Hwy 12, Randle, WA

Thursday, May 28, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Headquarters, 10600 NE 51st Circle, Vancouver, WA

The Travel Analysis Process is part of the 2005 Travel Management Rule and requires forests to provide a safe road system that is both financially and environmentally sustainable and can realistically be maintained. The Draft Travel Analysis Report displays where to prioritize investments in forest road infrastructure and maintenance.

“The Draft Travel Analysis Report will be used to inform future planning regarding management of roads in the national forest. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires the public be given notice and an opportunity to comment before any decision to permanently change the status of roads on the forest are made,” said Gifford Pinchot National Forest Supervisor Janine Clayton.

Information gathered over the past three years through six community meetings and a questionnaire helped the forest better understand public road use and access needs. The Draft Report will be posted online prior to the public meetings. Additional information about the Travel Analysis Process can be found on our website at:

This is the opening salvo in the TMP "part A", getting down to what they can maintain with the budget for roads/trails that they have. Since most forests are getting about 25 % of what it takes for road maint. each year, you can look to see around 75-80 % of roads go away, leaving mostly ML3, 4, & 5 open in the system.

If you want to get out and about in motorized recreation, you had better get to these upcoming meetings and get involved. It is about to the point of being too late but there is still time.
